I found it a little disappointing that, in response to a question from the audience on the fact that in nature there is no punishment, only perishing, someone of Agamben’s intellect felt there was no relation to the human institution of judgment or justice.
He says that in nature there is no judgment – but quite the opposite. To perish is in fact the punishment / consequence of having ‘failed’ as a member of the species. Especially to have failed before procreation.
I think there is a good argument for saying that human society is modeling itself after the natural world in a very significant way.
